It  is a sacred perennial grass in Hinduism and Buddhism, revered for its spiritual significance. It is native to India and other parts of Asia, thriving in dry, sandy, and arid regions.

The plant grows in dense clumps, with thin, erect stems reaching up to 1–3 feet in height. Its sharp-edged leaves are used in religious ceremonies, particularly in rituals for purification, sanctity, and as mats during prayers and meditation.

Darbha is believed to possess antimicrobial properties and is also used in traditional medicine for wound healing and treating fever. The grass is drought-resistant and plays an essential role in preventing soil erosion in its native habitats.
